Renting a car and driving it across the country is the best way to discover Portugal.
For safe journeys, we provide some essential information about driving in Portugal:

  • Currently, there are some toll roads, including the A22. Our vehicles are equipped with road control devices. These devices allow you to travel in toll roads with commodity.
  • The documents required are: personal identification document; driving license, insurance certificate, registration certificate of  Fines should be paid immediately;
  • Cars are not allowed abroad without Locauto’s permission;
  • The maximum speed for vehicles without trailers and motorcycles are: 50 km / h in towns, 90 km / h on normal routes; 100 km / h in the car lanes, 120 km / h on motorways;
  • The minimum speed on the motorway is 50km/h; 
  • The use of mobile phones while driving is prohibited, except if used with speaker or headset devices;
  • It is not allowed to drive with a blood alcohol content equal or greater than 0.5 grams per liter;
  • The use of seat belts is compulsory for all vehicle occupants;
  • Children under the age of 12 years or less than 1.5 m. are obliged to travel by car with the support of a child seat;
  • It is mandatory to use reflector vest when exiting a vehicle that is occupying the lane;
  • The use of warning triangles is required if the vehicle is immobilized on the roadway;
  • Parking on the street is not always allowed or free, there is, in many cities, paid parking areas. They are usually easy to identify because there are parking meters in the area;
  • When the visibility is low, and in tunnels the use of lights is mandatory;
  • To rent a car you must be over 23 years old, a valid driving license for over two years and identification (identity card for EU citizens or valid passport for other nationalities).
